CT (Computed Tomography)

MD Imaging uses the best, state-of-the-art imaging equipment. The General Electric LightSpeed CT scan provides excellent image quality and speed. Scans are done amazingly fast-at light speed.

What is a CT scan?
A CT scan, sometimes called a CAT scan, allows for X-ray to be used in a three-dimensional model. This scan is computed tomography (CT) which involves a series of detailed pictures inside the body created by a computer linked to an X-ray machine. This scan allows the viewing of thin cross-sections of the internal anatomy through scanning.
How does a CT scan work?
CT (Computed Tomography)

Imagine trying to guess what’s in Aunt Martha’s fruitcake…by slicing the cake you can see that there are dates, nuts, fruit and so on. A CT scan’s camera takes images (slices) inside a specific area of your body. This allows our radiologist the opportunity to examine your body in narrow slices, allowing them to pinpoint specific areas.

The CT combines X-rays and sophisticated computers to produce clear and detailed images of the body. As the body is being scanned, a motor turns the X-ray tube so that it may revolve around the body. Each revolution scans a “slice” of your body.

Depending on the type of scan you need, a contrast (dye injection) may be needed. Iodine contrast is injected intravenously (into your vein) so our radiologist can see your body structures on the CT. Once the contrast is injected you may feel a warm sensation throughout your body, or you may have a metallic taste in your mouth. These are common reactions and disappear shortly. If you experience shortness of breath or any other abnormal symptoms, tell your technologist right away.

Once you’re on the exam table the technologist will guide you through the process. The table automatically moves into position for scanning. It’s important that you lie as still as possible during the entire procedure. Movement, even small, could blur the images.

Why would I need a CT scan?
CT screening is a revolutionary way to detect early disease, such as cancer; determine the extent of head trauma, and assist in various diagnoses.
